Carrying the Flame
“You are witnesses of these things.” – Luke 24:48
The Emmaus journey does not end among the church community in that upper room.
Hearts that burn cannot remain contained. Those who have encountered Christ, walked together, and rejoiced in community are sent — as witnesses, participants in God’s work of love and renewal.
Carrying the Flame is the fourth movement of Walking Emmaus: living and serving in the world with hearts set alight.
Mission is not about performance or programs. It is the natural overflow of a heart warmed by Christ, ready to bless, heal, and serve where God has placed us.
How can I carry the flame?
Carrying the flame can be lived out in ordinary life:
Faithful presence. Being a Christlike presence amongst those I encounter each day and acting with love, patience, and integrity in daily life.
Service and justice. Using the gifts and resources that God has given me to respond to needs in our family, workplace, or community, particularly the disadvantaged and vulnerable.
Speaking hope. A life that burns with Christ and is reflected in integrity off character and loving service will be noticed. Be open to opportunities and prepared to share your story of faith.
Mentoring or supporting others. Carrying the flame is not just taking the good news and seeing people respond. We have the privilege of walking alongside others supporting and encouraging them to encounter Jesus and grow themselves.
Being open to God’s leading. As you are seeking to know God and discern his leading as you walk in companionship, God may be you leading you to carry the flame by moving somewhere else. Be open to that movement and see where God takes you and uses you!
